Quick Look
Trip Overview
Upper Dolpo Trekking is a popular trekking course in the Dolpo district of Nepal. The area is known for its breathtaking views and peaceful atmosphere. The region offers a celestial experience that takes you through various landscapes, ranging from arid and barren lands to lush meadows, waterfalls, and sacred lakes. Even though the trekking destination is in a remote part of Nepal, it is a real-life mountain paradise worth exploring.
The Upper Dolpo region has a scarcity of local people, and trekkers may sometimes not meet locals for a day or two. The area is heavily influenced by Buddhist culture. Still, unlike other parts of Nepal, the people here follow the Bon Po religion, which practices ancient shamanistic practices with roots in Tibet. The lack of sustainable resources and history led locals of this area to trade their products to Tibet to maintain their livelihood.
The journey to Dolpo trek begins with an hour-long scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. The actual trekking commences the day after landing in Dubai. The trekking trail traverses the lower area’s lush green valley and vegetated fields. As the trail heads up to the northern side, the land now converts into meadows and pastureland and then gradually to barren, arid land that spreads at the foothill of the great giant. Despite these facts, the peaceful trekking amid mountain Dhaulagiri (8167m) Annapurna Ranges, Manaslu, Nilgiri, etc., has become one of the most promising in life.
The Upper Dolpo Trek takes you through three high mountain passes, namely Jayanta La Pass (5220m), Saldang La Pass (5060m), and Kang La Pass (5380m). Crossing these passes is an exhilarating experience, and the trek culminates with a stay near the stunning Shey Phoksundo Lake. This fabulous, turquoise-coloured lake is a sight of awe-inspiring. Nearby, you can explore the Demon’s Trail, a trade route with Tibet that has been used for centuries, and visit Shey Gompa, a sacred monastery said to have been built over 800 years ago, and houses in ancient Tibetan styles.
The region boasts a wide range of biodiversity, including the Snow Leopard and Blue Sheep, making trekking in the area a worthwhile experience. Witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is a backdrop to the journey from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu, which can be enjoyed via a scenic flight.

The team’s arrival at Nepalgunj will also give some insight into the diverse culture of different ethnic people from north to south, including from India. Moreover, the airport of Nepalgunj is the gateway to Simikot, Humla. The climate in Nepalgunj is tropical, while the environment in Dolpo is quite the opposite amid the Himalayan surroundings.
Maximum Altitude: 2850m Flight duration: 45 mins Trek duration: 2-3 hours
After breakfast, the Dolpo Trekking Team will head to Juphal from Nepalgunj early in the morning, which will take around 45 minutes. As noon approaches, the atmosphere changes to heavy winds, causing hurdles to fly. Landing at Juphal (2500m) airport is enchanting. The airport itself is on the ridge, so it’s thrilling. The glimpse from the window of the flight and landing at the airport is unbelievable, with snow-capped mountains, lush green valleys, ridges, rich-green meadows, farming land, terraces, etc.
The adventurous Dolpo Trekking begins from Dunai and traverses the Hindu and Buddhist villages along the Thuli Bheri River. The traditional wearing of the local people is quite different from that of other areas. The women wear typical dresses, and rings on their noses are put with colorful ruby wreaths. On top of anything, there are spectacular mountain range views – Annapurna, Nilgiri, & Dhaulagiri, Kagmara Peak, etc. Following the trail along the Bheri River, the Dolpo trekking team eventually reaches Dunai – the region’s headquarters.
Overnight stay will be at Dunai, includes Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 2896m
Trek duration: 6-7 hours
Start your day with a hearty breakfast and set off towards Ankhe from Dunai, passing through the Bheri valley and climbing up to the arid barren that connects our journey to the awe-inspiring Phoksundo River Valley. From here, you’ll reach a ridge at an altitude of 2,499m, which offers a stunning view of the Kagmara peak and other ranges.
Dhera, located at 2810m, is a popular spot for locals due to its walnut orchards and cattle and goat-keeping settlements in winter. As you continue uphill from here, you’ll cross Rahagaon (2900m) and reach the Gompa dedicated to the Local God – Mastha – revered for protecting the region. The barren, arid landscape will soon give way to a canyon, and you’ll begin descending through a dense forest to reach Ankhe, where you’ll spend the night.
Overnight stay at Ankhe, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 3104m
Trek duration: 6-7 hours
After breakfast, start your trek from Ankhe towards Renje. The trail begins with a long descent towards the riverbank covered by dense woods. As you progress, you’ll encounter some challenging uphill sections, eventually leading to a stone-paved staircase-like trail. This trail takes you back down to the riverbank before finally arriving at the overnight camp for the day.
Maximum Altitude: 3350m
Trek duration: 4-5 hours
After breakfast, continue your trek from Renje toward Phoksundo Lake. The trail leads you to the valley floor, where you’ll come across the confluence of the Phoksundo and Pungmo rivers. Cross the confluence through a bridge over the rivers, and as you continue trekking along the western bank of Pungmo Khola, you’ll reach the beautiful Cedar Forest. As you hike up to 3350m, the impressive views are astounding, with Phoksundo Lake and the highest waterfall in Nepal mesmerizing the Dolpo Trekking team. The Tibetan-style houses with Chortens and Mani Walls flatter the mud-plastered stupas, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. Spend the night at Phoksundo Lake Camp, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 3611m
Trek duration: 4-5 hours
After breakfast at Phoksundo Lake camp, the Upper Dolpo trekking team heads to the next camp from the woody land and comes to meet the pass-through rocky crevasses before the trail links to the Phoksundo Riverbank. Once you reach the riverbank, the trail will be diverted into the westernmost direction. The lush meadow and the semi-flat land the team follows along the Phoksundo Lake will be our camp to stay tonight.
Stay at the camp alongside the Phoksundo Lake, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 4126m
Trek duration: 4-5 hours
In approximately 5 hours, you’ll head forth to the Phoksundo Pass. Once you pass through Phoksundo, follow the glacial valley towards the north. The diversion towards the northeast will lead the way to the majestic Himalayan viewpoint – Kang-La pass, from where the trekkers enjoy the vistas of Chhamlang Peak (6739m) and Peak 7 (6105m) along with others beside them before arriving at the campsite.
Maximum Altitude: 5010m
Trek duration: 6-7 hours
Today’s trekking will be unique, with the team meeting spiritual Gompas and monasteries influenced by Tibetan culture and religion. The Upper Dolpo Trekking team visits the famous Shey Gompa in the region, including Crystal Mountain. The region’s locals pay their circumambulate respect in Crystal Mountain during the full moon in July or August before the yearly grain harvest begins. Thus, Crystal Mountain is like the Kailash Mountain in Tibet to the people of Dolpo, and the Shey Gompa is built up to commemorate the won battle. Trekkers will head up to the Kang-La pass, which offers memorable views of Shey Shikar and Kang Chunel mountains. Onward trekking will take you to a high point at 4860m and 5010m, and the trail begins to descend to the Tar Valley. Further hiking takes you to a grassy slope that leads to a Gompa called Tsakan.
Today is an acclimatization day. After breakfast, the trekking team will explore the famous Shey Gompa and the nearby villages. The Dolpo people and locals have a unique faith in BON PO, the oldest form of Buddhism. During the exploration, the team will search for houses with flat roofs, uncommon in other parts of Nepal where thatch, hay, and roof stone are more typical. Along the way, Himalayan travelers will see Mani Walls and Chortens, common in Buddhist settlements in Nepal. These structures are often found on passes or at the height of settlements and can be seen from far away, symbolizing human settlement to the SOS.
Shey Gompa was built in 1655 and is dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha. The statue here is made from gold-gilded copper. The Lamas reside at Tsakang, which is a nearby meditating place. Crystal Gompa is a feature of the trekking route, located to the east. It is built on a contorted cliff embedded with quartz and other marine fossils. The building is said to be 800 years old and contains statues of Shakyamuni Buddha and Rinpoche. The wall painting here was made in the 1970s.
Crystal Mountain has some craters and lakes. Buddhist pilgrims believe that the water turns into a milky substance by making nine circumambulations of the lakes. Drinking this water allows the sipper to observe the far-located Mt. Kailash easily.
Maximum Altitude: 5220m Trek duration: 6-7 hours
After breakfast, the Upper Dolpo trekking team will face Saldang La Pass through a pleasant trail from Shey Gompa Village to Namduna Village. The trail will be winding, and after a while, it will change into a rugged, eroded trail on bare rocks before arriving at Namduna village. As the team traverses to the northern side, they will enjoy the nomadic tents with yak and mountain goats on the pastureland. Additionally, the team will visit the Namduna Monastery, located on a cliff. The team will stay overnight at Namduna Village, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 3620m Trek duration: 5-6 hours
After a restful night under the clear sky, the trekking team will have breakfast before beginning the next day of the journey. They will travel to Saldang Goan from Namduna Gaon, and the trail will be a bit more strenuous as it will be on barren mountains. The Saldang village is located on the plateau of Namga Khola and is a large, well-known settlement in the Upper Dolpo Region. The settlement extends over two Kilometers and is home to approximately 600 people living in around 90 houses. They manage their daily life here with trade to Tibet.
Maximum Altitude: 3942m Trek duration: 5-6 hours
After breakfast at the Saldang camp, the trekker will go to Sibu from the point. On the way, they will pass the Yangtze village and arrive at the junction of two ways. One of the ways is easier and more pleasant to Sibu. While trekking to Sibu, the trekkers will pass through a river, terraced fields, stupas, chortens, monastery, gompas, and mani walls before arriving at Namdo village. The village is beautiful, situated on a cliff next to the pristine Nam Khong River, with an approximate extension of 6 or 7 kilometers. The Namdo Monastery has been a place of reverence for protecting the village. The team will stay overnight at Sibu Village, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 4,900m Trek duration: 5-6 hours
The trekking team will follow the herds of yaks that help carry the daily needs of the Upper Dolpo Trekking to Jeng La pass (4900m), closer to the Tibetan border. The team will ascend through the cliff and then the alpine meadow.
Maximum Altitude: 4,900m Trek duration: 5-6 hours
On this day, the trekking team will hike for approximately six hours, heading to Tokyu Gaon from Jeng La pass. The north face of the Dhaulagiri appears majestically and enchants the trekkers. The continuation of the descending trail through the trekkers from the Tarap Valley offers the ecstasy of this fascinating adventure at Upper Dolpo Trekking. The valley keeps going along the Tarap Chu River, and following the valley, the trekkers will come to Tokyu Gaon, where they will settle for the night at camp.
Maximum Altitude: 4240m
Trek duration: 5-6 hours
The trek starts from Tokyu Gaon and descends to the valley along the riverside, passing by lush green grasslands and desert-like marshes. The trekking team will also visit the village of Bon Po religion followers en route to Dho Tarap. After a 5–6-hour trek, the team will reach the campsite at Dho Tarap, where they will spend the night and have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 4040m
Trek duration: 4-5 hours
The trek from Dho Tarap to Serkam begins with a descent to a wide valley and then into a beautiful gorge. The area is covered with juniper and rose bushes, and yaks and sheep can be seen grazing in the meadows. The trekking team will come across the village of Serkam, located next to the Tarap Chu and Lang Rivers confluence. They will stay overnight at Serkam village, having breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 3150m
Trek duration: 5-6 hours
The trek to Khani Gaon takes about 6 hours and mostly goes downhill from 4040m to 3150m. The trekking team will pass through the Tarap River gorge, where the locals come down to escape the extreme cold in winter. After walking on the makeshift bridge of the stone slab for a few hours, the team will reach Khani Gaon. Stay overnight at the campsite and have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 2537m
Trek duration: 5-6 hours
The trekking team will cross another gorge to reach Tarakot from Khani Gaon. The views are more pleasant here, with lush bushes and forests. The team will explore the Sandul Gompa and camp near the confluence of the Tarap Chu and Barbung Rivers, where they will have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 2140m
Trek duration: 5-6 hours
The trekking team will make a beautiful circuit trip in the Upper Dolpo region and finally reach Dunai. They will pass through the Bheri River trail, Lawan village, Byas Gadi, and Locha Khola Gaon before ascending to Dunai. They will stay overnight at the campsite and have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Maximum Altitude: 2449m
Trek duration: 5-6 hours
The trekking team will descend to its average height and enjoy the pleasant landscape. The trek goes along the Bheri River through Dhupichaur, Rupgad, Kalakonda, and Motipur before arriving in Juphal. From Juphal, the team will catch a flight to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.
Maximum Altitude: 2449m

Are there any hospitals or clinics on the trekking route, especially in the remote areas of the Solu-Khumbu region, such as the Everest Trekking Region?
Yes, there are hospitals and clinics located in Jiri, Lukla, Kunde, and Pheriche, which are popular spots along the Everest Highway trekking route. These facilities have been set up to reach assistance to the travellers in this area including altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is a unique condition that can be dangerous if left untreated.
For those visiting the Jomsom/Manang region in Annapurna, trekkers will have set up of hospital at Jomsom and Manang. This is to ensure that you can enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the area with a healthy body and mind. However, if you feel unwell or experience symptoms such as loss of appetite, fever, or diarrhea, which you suspect are not related to altitude sickness, please discuss your situation with your guide immediately and seek medical attention. We encourage you to prioritize your health and well-being by visiting hospitals and taking care of your health. It’s important to take care of your health while trekking. Some trekkers have experienced increased energy levels after trekking, while others have died from illnesses such as diarrhea, normal fever, and shortness of breath due to ignoring the warnings of altitude sickness.
Therefore, it is highly recommended to visit these established clinics and hospitals to ensure your well-being while trekking.
In the popular trekking routes, there are various health facilities like hospitals and clinics except for the remote areas. Even in remote areas, there are some healthcare facilities available, but for critical cases all these small hospital booth refers patients to the main cities for better care.
Altitude sickness is a condition that affects individuals differently. Even experienced mountain climbers or high-altitude trekkers may experience altitude sickness, while beginners may not be affected even when they exceed the normal altitude. Altitude sickness usually occurs when the altitude exceeds 3000m.
The best way to prevent altitude sickness is to climb slowly. If you feel any discomfort, it’s important to consult your guide and descend the mountain. You can avoid altitude sickness by choosing a reasonable route and gradually increasing the altitude. If you’re planning to trek in Nepal, it’s important to learn more about altitude sickness beforehand. We have over a decade of experience as mountain experts, so we can assist with altitude sickness or other illnesses that may arise during trekking.
When planning a trekking trip in Nepal, it’s important to prioritize your physical and mental health. Choose clothing that is comfortable, flexible, and can adapt to changing weather conditions. Trekking often involves spending nights in lowlands and highlands, so it’s important to prepare for significant temperature changes between day and night. In the Everest region, mornings and evenings are cold while afternoons can be sunny, so pack accordingly. Here are some essential items to bring on your trek: appropriate clothing and equipment, a healthy mindset, and a fit body.
The ideal trekking season in Nepal is from March to May, and from September to November or mid-December. Although it often rains from June to August, it is still considered a comfortable season for trekking in the Mustang and Dolpo area, which is the far northern remote part of Nepal. In autumn, from September to December, the skies are clear, and the Himalayas are beautiful. From December to February, the weather is bitterly cold, and snow falls at altitudes above 3,000 meters. However, if you are well-prepared, you can fully enjoy your trip. Spring fog begins in March, and the outlook becomes more difficult than we hoped for. Even if it is sunny after May, it is not suitable for trekking due to the rainy season.
Private rooms are available for sightseeing in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other towns. However, for short treks and high-altitude Himalayan base camp treks, you will need to stay in a lodge. You’ll be served Nepalese dishes including dal bhat, fried noodles, chowmein, and thukpa (noodles with vegetables), as well as Western foods like French toast, toast, stir-fried vegetables, garlic soup, vegetable soup, omelets, dumplings, pizza, pancakes, and porridge. Additionally, you can also enjoy Tibetan dishes and boiled rice. The availability of menu items like potatoes, French fries, fried dumplings, squirt bread, steak, and more will depend on the price plan.
When trekking, you will usually be staying in rooms for two people instead of individual ones. During the busy seasons, you may have to sleep in a dormitory. If you are trekking to Everest or Annapurna between September and December, which is a popular route with fewer people in the group, you may even end up using a sleeping bag and sleeping in an empty dormitory.
The bed will come with a comforter and pillow, but if you tend to feel cold, it’s best to bring your sleeping bag. Make sure to check if you need a thicker sleeping bag depending on the trekking season. In some cases, the toilets may be located outside the lodge, so it’s a good idea to bring a raincoat and a flashlight. Remember to carry a flashlight with you, as the roads can be unfamiliar and dangerous.
In addition to Nepalese dal and bhat, there are a variety of dishes available such as porridge, papad, omelets, fried and boiled eggs, boiled potatoes, udon-style (mixed veg with noodle) soup with side dishes, stir-fried vegetables, tarkari (curry) fried noodles-style chowmein (fry noodle), pancakes, French toast, toast, sandwiches, boiled dumplings, meat and vegetable soup, fried rice, sweets, candy, bread, biscuits, snacks, and potato chips.

Nepal is a popular destination for mountaineering, trekking, and peak climbing enthusiasts. The country boasts of untouched natural beauty, but in recent years, due to increasing development plans and population, deforestation and environmental pollution have become serious issues. Nepal is now experiencing the effects of global warming. As Nepal is a challenging site for trekkers, climbers, and tourists from various countries, it is important to avoid any acts that may cause pollution and harm to the environment.
Our company is committed to preserving the natural beauty of Nepal and avoiding pollution caused by tourists. We request our customers to dispose of all the garbage they generate during their trekking tours responsibly. Our company employs highly knowledgeable human resources (guides) for nature conservation and urges all customers to be mindful of preserving nature and contributing to the next generation. We request our customers to use the garbage bins set up by SPCC, ACAP, MCAP, etc. to avoid littering or to take their garbage home with them.
It would be beneficial to use this website to appeal to all agents and bookers worldwide, to ensure that they are not charged for causing pollution or littering the environment. This action should be taken with mutual understanding so that all of us involved agree with the measures taken to prevent pollution and littering.
We have created a frequently asked questions section based on the opinions, experiences, and advice of our past customers. This section is designed to answer any questions you may have, so please check it out before contacting us. If you do need to reach out to us, we are available at any time.
The Thamel district, a popular tourist area, has seen an increase in the number of children and adults begging on the streets. However, giving them money may not be the best way to help them, as it could hinder their development and perpetuate the idea that society bears the burden. Instead, it’s important to avoid such behavior and if you feel compelled to help, offer them food that is ready to eat, like pieces of bread or biscuits. This would prevent them from selling it for money. It’s also a good idea to educate these children about their social responsibilities.
